Q: Hi!

A: That is not a question, but hi 🙂

Q: Where do you live?

A: It’s creepy when you ask like that! But it’s something a lot of people ask, and they don’t seem satisfied when I say “under the hill” so I’ll just say that I split my time between Nashville (where I grew up), rural France (where my family lives), and Edinburgh (where I buried my heart). If I’m not in one of those three places, I’m probably on tour.

Q: What are a few of your favorite things?

A: Black breakfast tea (not Earl Grey, that is Satan’s drink, it tastes like my grandmother’s old clothes steeped in warm water), very dark chocolate, cake, animals (especially if I can pet them), whisky, steep hills.

Q: Will you help me with this paper/report/school assignment?

A: Probably not. Not because I don’t care about your academic success, but because I need to write books, or else my publisher won’t pay me and I won’t be able to afford things like heat and electricity and cake.

Q: How many books do you have out?

A: Right now, 13, but the number is always growing! Check the BOOKS page for the latest tally.

Q: Is your book coming out in my country?

A: I don’t know, and unfortunately foreign sales are not in an author’s power. The easiest thing to do is check Goodreads and see if there’s a foreign edition listed. Keep in mind that foreign editions aren’t always listed there until close to release, so check back if you don’t see it!

Q: Will you come to my [insert school/festival/other event]?

A: Writing takes up a large amount of my year, but you’re welcome to email my publicist, Kristin, whose info is on the Contacts page, and ask.

Q: Do you have any updates on [insert film/tv project in development]?

A: I promise you, when there are updates, I will talk about them. At length. In the meantime, please be patient 🙂

Q: Can you make [insert publishing thing] happen?

A: Here’s a catch-all, lovelies. I do not control covers, publicity, marketing, foreign sales, tour stops, or any one of the many, many, many things that go into making a book. Go ahead and assume that the only thing I truly have control over is the story on the page <3

Q: How do you pronounce Rhy?

A: Like WHY.

Q: How many books are in the Shades of Magic series?

A: Great question! The Shades of Magic arc is three books, and then the upcoming Threads of Power arc will be three more! The best way to think about it is this: if the character survived A CONJURING OF LIGHT, you’ll see them again in Threads!

Q: When is the third ARCHIVED book coming out?

A: The short answer is, I don’t know. For the long answer, go read THIS THREAD.

Q: I messaged you on [insert social media platform of choice] and I didn’t get an answer!

A: I’m sorry! I am incredibly lucky to have such a robust and communicative following, but I am only one small human with aspirations of world domination, and things invariably slip through the cracks. It took me TWO YEARS to find the messages window on Instagram! I do my best.

Q: Why do you write as both V.E. and Victoria?

A: The short answer is that if I’m writing YA or Middle Grade, it’s Victoria, and if I’m writing Adult, it’s V.E. But even the short answer is complicated by the fact some of my YA books come out as adult in different countries, and some of my Adult books come out as YA! The real reason is that, as much as I love this industry and its readers, we often have a perception problem. I’ve had people tell me to my face that they were SO glad they didn’t know I was a woman, or they wouldn’t have picked up my books! (Ew, right?) But I’d rather they fall in love with my work and then have to face their bias, than never read the work because of it.
